Eli's weatherClock

An digital analog clock but instead of showing the hours, the clock shows the weather at that hour of the day. So instead of showing 1, it will show the weather forecast for 1AM/PM. Click on the hour for more detailed information such as wind, precipitation and more. Once in the detailed view, simply click the center again to return to the analog clock face.

Video demo

You will need to:

  • Acquire Pi Zero W and a Pimoroni 4" touchscreen
  • Install a full Raspbian distribution (not lite)
  • Install python pynput module. Pynput needs X11 which is on full Raspbian distributions.
  • Obtain your own OpenWeatherMap API key
  • Follow the "Setting up your Raspberry Pi" instructions to setup the Pi to push display to the Pimoroni screen
  • Set your location, API key, and other corresponding values in the settings.json
  • Print the two parts of the case (files found in repo). CAD found [here](CAD files for enclosure located here

There is an option to have the temperature and/or wind values overlayed on top of the weather icons as an awesome feature by @plotln. This is disabled by default to keep the clean look of the original weatherClock. By setting TemperatureValues and WindValues to True you can enable the overlay feature.

NOTE: This watchface was also optimized for 320*240 screen (tested with OrangePi Lite and RPi screen) - in this case replace "settings.json" file contents with the contents of "settings_320_240.json" (or just replace the file).

From @plotn If you want you can create autostart script (for xfce4 you should put it into ~/.config/autostart):

File 1: wClock.desktop Contents:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=wClock
Exec=/home/plotn/.config/autostart/wClock.sh
StartupNotify=false
Terminal=true

File 2: wClock.sh With the contents like this (script must be executable sh file):

cd  /home/plotn/github/weatherClock/
while :
do
  if test "$(ps aux | grep python3 | grep weather | wc -l)" -eq "0"
  then
    python3.9 ./weatherClock.py & disown
  else
    echo "already started"
  fi
  sleep 5
done

NOTE: I have experienced an issue with running this on the Pi Zero W - after a few days, the program starts to get super slow and at some point the program closes itself. A few contributors have provided some potential solutions and these are under test. Update: 2021-10-07, the program doesn't close itself anymore, however it still gets very slow, the second hand only updates every ~15 seconds, instead of every 1 second as it should.
